Changed Lives

Agape changes lives! The children we help go from homeless, hungry and lonely to cared for and hopeful. Our patients receive healing and hope. Our staff feels a sense of clear purpose in their lives. Our donors know they are making a powerful difference in the lives of those in need.

Our Kids

Meet the Venkateshwarlu Family. Venu (11), Sai (8) and Navya’s (5) father died of AIDS leaving the mother, who is HIV positive, to care for the children. The mother’s illness progressed to the point where she was no longer able to stand or walk much and there was no extended family to care for the children. Venu worked in a hotel to bring in the family’s only meager income. He and his brother Sai had never attended school.

The children all came to live in Agape’s Uppal orphanage with the blessing of their mother. It was difficult for the mother to turn over her children, but there was also great relief in knowing that the children would be well cared for. Venu, Sai and Navya are flourishing in the orphanage. They are attending school for the first time. They are happy children and they love to play. Venu says he “never wants to leave my new home.”

Meet Laxmi. Laxmi (age 6) also came to an Agape orphanage with her two older brothers Anil (10) and Satish (9). Laxmi’s mother died a few years ago of AIDS and her father, also AIDS positive, abandoned the family. Laxmi lived with her aunt, a widow whose only means of income was selling vegetables along the roadside. Laxmi has thrived at the orphanage – she has gained needed weight, ….

Our Patients Siva Ram is an 18 month old born to a poor labor class family in India. Siva Ram came to the Agape clinic weak and non responsive. He is small and underweight for his age and still doesn't walk at 18 months old. Siva Ram has what is commonly known as Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM). After being diagnosed, the doctor prescribed a two week course of high quality pediatric liquid vitamins. Two weeks later the parents returned to the clinic with the boy. With great joy the mother exclaimed, “Before we came here he couldn't sit up, now he's sitting on his own!” The parents were astonished and now hopeful. The Agape staff clearly noticed Siva Ram was looking much better and more alert - even attempting to give the staff a few half smiles. We are continuing to provide him with vitamins in the hope that maybe he will begin to walk. Simple vitamins can make all the difference in the world to a small impoverished child. The medication cost 50 cents. To us, this a small price for something that can change a child's life, however, many times even this nominal amount is unaffordable by the families in India. Agape Intl. bought the medication for Siva Ram, and we clearly see the benefit those drugs had with the result of him now being able to sit own his own.

Our Donors

The Edgerleys. Paul and Sandy were long time friends of Kim Ogden, Agape’s COO. Paul and Sandy are known throughout Boston for their generosity and support of many philanthropic organizations. Sandy and Paul gave generously to get Agape off the ground. Their match donation helped fund Agape’s first 3 orphanages. While Paul and Sandy give to many causes, they understand the magnitude of their impact on Agape and the kids they help support. “It’s hard to believe that our donation is helping to keep 150 kids alive.”
